Today is a very sad day in America.

A Democratic congresswoman in Michigan endorsed a Republican and is now being attacked by her own party for doing so.

What happened to us?

We have replaced freedom with conformity and democracy with coercion. We have forgotten that one of the most sacred rights in this country is the right to speak your conscience.

You should be able to be a Democrat and still say that on one issue, a Republican idea is better for your community. You should be able to be a Republican and still say that on one issue, a Democratic idea is better. That is not betrayal. That is integrity. That is thinking for yourself.

There was a time in this country when this was normal. The parties were big and diverse. They had liberals and conservatives inside the same party. People voted for ideas and for people, not just for a party label. Crossing the aisle was seen as statesmanship, not as a crime.

Today we demand one hundred percent purity. If you agree with your party ninety nine percent of the time and disagree one percent of the time, you are treated as a traitor. That is not how a free country is supposed to work.

An elected official is supposed to represent everyone in her district, not just the loudest voices in her party. She is supposed to have the freedom to look at an issue and say what she truly believes.

If we punish people for thinking for themselves, we are not saving democracy. We are losing it
